Blogging for Homework Help
If I were to implement blogging into my classroom, I would probably start the blog as a place where students could go to get homework help. I teach high school math, and students are always looking for additional help. In addition to offering help after school, I always tell my students to consult Google and YouTube for help as well. In order to help with this process, I could create a blog that has examples of websites and videos that could help them for various units though out the term. I would also encourage students to contribute by providing links that they find useful and to discuss challenging problems, major concepts, and study tips with each other. The purpose of this blog would be to make the classroom accessible from home. Whenever one of my students felt stressed out the night before a test or while they were doing their homework, I would hope that this blog could be a place that puts their mindset back in my classroom.

I think that one of the advantages that the internet brings to education is that it allows students a greater degree of independence in choosing learning activities. Your ideas for blogging look great. Trying to review a variety of topics in the whole-class setting would be valuable only if all of the kids were at the same level of understanding. But your blog will enable all students to differentiate their instruction based on their individual needs. Does your school offer computer time for students before or after school? This would help to insure that students that have no computer or internet at home are able to benefit from your blog.
ReplyDeleteYes, students are allowed to use computers in the media center before and after school, and also during lunch. This would definitely help those students who do not have Internet access at home.
DeleteI like the idea of blogging to assist with homework help. One of the challenges that I would have with using it for that purpose would be routinely checking the blog to insure speedy responses. I think it would be great if you could setup a time that you checked nightly, so that your students knew that if they had a question before 8 pm for instance, then you would be able to answer it for them.
ReplyDeleteI did not think about having a set response time, but it sounds like a great idea. It would definitely make my life easier because I would not feel obligated to constantly be checking the classroom blog for updates, terrific idea!
DeleteI like this idea! I encourage my students to email me for help if they get stuck doing homework or studying at home. Since my email gets sent to my cell phone, I usually notice the email quickly and can respond in a timely manner. I have only had a few students take advantage of this opportunity. I wonder if students would feel more comfortable going to my blog instead of emailing me personally. On my blog, students can ask their classmates for help as well as me. I think many students would be grateful for this opportunity, however, some may not like to ask their questions for everyone to see and would prefer a private message. It is definitely worth giving it a shot though!
ReplyDeleteYes, I think there would be a lot of students who would rather send a private message. However, I really want my kids to become more social, and fear that allowing them to post on a blog rather than ask a question in class is already creating a social setback, and private messaging would set them back even more. If it were the only way that some students would communicate, however, I would definitely allow it.
